The City of Regina says it will charge homeowners $91.25 a year for its upcoming curbside recycling service.

That amount, equal to $7.60 a month or 25 cents a day, is to be considered by city council in committee form on Wednesday.

Paper, plastic, glass and tin cans are among the items people will be able to put into their individual recycling carts, starting next July.

A private company under contract to the city, Loraas Disposal Ltd., will haul the material away to be recycled.

The city assumes it will have 63,500 carts in use.

City officials hope to see 40 per cent less discarded material ending up in the landfill.

While garbage collection is paid for out of general tax revenues, recycling will be paid for by the user.

The city plans to launch the new recycling fee on July 1, 2013. The fee is mandatory and will be added to people's utility bills.

City council will deal with the report on the recycling fee on Sept. 17.

Meanwhile, the City of Saskatoon is preparing to roll out its own household recycling program next January.

According to the city's Frequently Asked Questions page, it will charge homeowners $3.83 a month, plus a 50 cent per month administration fee.
