The regional park is just west of LeRoy, which is about 160 kilometres east of Saskatoon. (CBC)A community east of Saskatoon is debating the potential sale of its regional park to a land developer.
About 150 people packed into the LeRoy Wildlife Hall last night to talk about the future of Leroy Leisureland Park.
The park has a nine-hole golf course, a swimming pool and a campground, but has been losing money. Now, a company from B.C. named Pac West Properties has expressed interest in taking it over.
One of the people at the meeting, retired teacher Bob Damm, said it's understandable that people are upset.
"A company coming in from Vancouver taking over our little park that we've loved and nurtured for 40 years? That's what upset them," Damm said.
There has been some speculation that Pac West wants to build a workers camp for the BHP Billiton potash mine being developed near LeRoy.
Damm said he had some concerns, but at the end of the meeting he was feeling cautiously optimistic about the company's involvement.
The meeting began with some people jeering but ended with some cheers, and a healthy amount of applause.
The company is promising that the Leroy Leisureland Park will remain "as is" or better.
The purchase price remains confidential for now. The deal is to be signed at the end of October.
