A Saskatoon superbike racer is getting ready to ride again, less than four months after he broke his neck at a race in Europe.

Brett McCormick suffered a broken C5 vertebra, a mangled hand and other injuries in the crash, which took place during a superbike world championship race in Assen, the Netherlands, on April 21.

But McCormick was not paralyzed, and following months of physiotherapy, he has been cleared to resume professional racing.

"I've never been the person to look at things negatively," he told CBC News from his home in Saskatoon, where he has been working on building his strength.

"Instead of looking at it like, 'Hey, I just broke my neck and I probably shouldn't do this anymore because it might happen again,' you look at it as, 'OK, here's a challenge. You know, I got a couple months off the bike, but I'm [going to] come back stronger, better.' And I'm excited for that."

McCormick, who turned 21 years old on Monday, is set to fly later this week to Europe, where he will compete in a superbike race in Germany early next month.

He said his support from his family — including his father, Grant McCormick — has kept him going through some frustrating times as he recovered from the broken neck.

"For both his mom and I, the thing is just for him to do what he wants to do, follow his passions and be happy no matter what it is," the elder McCormick said.

"If he didn't want to race motorcycles, we'd support him in whatever he wanted to do. So this is luckily a talent he's got, and he enjoys it and he loves it, so we're behind him 100 per cent."
