According to police, officers were dispatched Wednesday morning to the home after receiving reports of an agitated man inside, who was smashing items in the house.

"When members attended, the male that was causing the problems became animated," police said in a news release about the incident. "[He was] yelling and swearing. He then retreated to the rear of the house away from the members."

Police said they were then able to assist another person in the house, a 66-year-old woman, to get out of the home.

Officers were able to communicate with the man, and were told he had a firearm.

The situation grew tense when police heard noises that sounded like gun fire.

They called for extra officers to come to the scene and evacuated a number of neighbouring homes.

"'The members continued to negotiate with the suspect for about two hours until he exited the residence and was taken into custody," police said.

They also found a long gun inside the home.

A 32-year-old man is facing a number of charges, including uttering threats and assault.

He remains in custody pending his next court appearance.

Rose Valley is about 195 kilometres east of Saskatoon.
