The backhoe operator who was found guilty of workplace safety violations following an explosion of natural gas in Nipawin, Sask., where two people died, has been handed a fine of $28,000.

The explosion, on April 18, 2008, was blamed on a ruptured natural gas line. Lorry Reimer was working near the line.

In May, 2012, a provincial court judge ruled that Reimer was responsible for the accident, which led to the deaths of Jack Boxall, the owner of a trucking company, and his son Brent Boxall.

Six other individuals were injured in the same incident. Several Nipawin business were destroyed in the explosion and subsequent fire. Provincial officials said the ministry of labour is reviewing regulations related to how gas lines are marked.
