People in dozens of communities including Winnipeg are cleaning up tonight after a handful of severe thunderstorms swept across the southern part of the province, causing widespread damage.

There were unconfirmed reports of funnel clouds in southern Saskatchewan earlier Sunday.

The cluster of storms swept in from Saskatchewan in the early evening packing winds estimated at 100 to 150 km/h. Although property damage was reported, there were no reports of injuries.

In the Winnipeg neighbourhood of North Kildonan, a section of a flat roof was torn from an apartment building's mechanical level after a gust of wind swept through.

"At the very moment I left the house and looked up to the west, I saw a large section of roof being peeled off the high rise apartment building located across Henderson Highway," said Ian Currie, a North Kildonan resident.

"It was like a scene from a movie."

Winnipeg residents reported damage to cars; trees cracked, littering the streets with branches and leaves.

In Twin Lakes Beach, on the south shore of Lake Manitoba, the wind caved in windows of houses and cottages along the beach, said Earl Zotter, reeve of St Laurent.

Two people in a trailer home received minor injuries when storm hit, he said. The municipality will meet early Monday to assess the damage in a community that still hasn't recovered from the devastating flood of 2011.

A Manitoba Hydro spokesman said 26,000 customers in Fort Rouge are without power as well as 1,000 in Selkirk and thousands across southern Manitoba.

Hydro said the utility has called in extra staff but there's no estimate of when power will be restored.
