After a quarter-century in politics, Moose Jaw Mayor Glenn Hagel has announced his retirement.

Hagel, 62, who is also a former member of the legislative assembly and cabinet minister in former Premier Lorne Calvert's NDP government, announced Wednesday he's packing it in after a 24-year career in public office and won't be a candidate for mayor this fall.

"I've run in eight elections here in Moose Jaw and every decision was with the full approval of my family," Hagel said in a news release. "Together, we decided that the time had come to retire from political life."

Hagel was the MLA for Moose Jaw North from 1986 to 2007. He was elected mayor of Moose Jaw in 2009.

Municipal elections are set for Oct. 24.
