A Carrot River, Sask., man who shot a Mountie because he was worried his dad would find out he stole some beer and liquor has been sentenced to two years in custody.

On Thursday, a provincial court judge sentenced the man as a youth for firing a gun with intent to wound Const. Gregory Toogood.

After he serves his time in custody, he'll be under supervision in the community for a year.

During the man's trial last year, court heard that on the night in question, he went to Toogood's home with a Remington .30-06 calibre rifle.

According to a set of facts agreed to by the Crown and defence, the young man was trying to scare the officer into leaving town.

The youth had been caught stealing alcohol and was afraid his father, who knew Toogood, would find out about it.

As Toogood went to the back door of his Carrot River home to check on a barking dog, he was shot in the arm. He recovered and is still with the RCMP.

The Crown wanted the man to be sentenced as an adult, which would mean a prison sentence of at least four years. However, the judge decided a youth sentence was appropriate.

"I don't want to say he's happy," Brian Pfefferle, the man's lawyer, said after sentencing. "This has been a very troubling situation for everyone involved. He is certainly very relieved. It's the result we asked for."

Because of his age, the man will serve the time in a provincial jail, not a youth centre.

Carrot River is about 250 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
