Texting and driving don't mix, the RCMP says, and the CBC's Dani Mario put that to the test on Monday.

Mario was part of a media contingent that used virtual simulators and went out on the driving track at the RCMP Training Academy.

She sent out texts and tweets on her smartphone while "behind the wheel." (See sidebar).

The RCMP says that in 2010, there were nearly 8,500 collisions involving distracted driving, resulting in 60 deaths and more than 2,300 injuries.

Using handheld electronic devices while driving is against the law. The fine for talking on a hand-held cellphone or texting while driving is $280 and four demerit points.
