A gun went off at St. Peter School in Saskatoon. (CBC)A Saskatoon elementary school was the scene of gunfire Thursday after an 11-year-old boy brought a firearm into a classroom.
It happened at around 10:15 a.m. CST at St. Peter School at 202 Sumner Cr. on the city's west end.
No one was hurt when the .45 calibre handgun was discharged.
Police said it appears the gun was fired accidentally and that the boy didn't know it was loaded.
The shot went into a locker at the back of the classroom.
Police said they're working with school officials, the boy and his family.
Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, children under 12 cannot be charged with a criminal offence.
The episode left parents, and youngsters, shaken.
"I'm a little bit concerned for my daughter's safety and obviously the other children that attend the school," one parent told CBC News after classes were let out.
"I'm just shaking," said another. "My knees are like Jello."
Counsellors were brought to the school to ease students' fears.
