SaskEnergy is extending its gas leak monitoring program through this month, due to unusually warm weather this fall.

Several explosions in south Regina this past spring, caused by leaking natural gas lines, are also factors in SaskEnergy's push to ramp up gas leak monitoring efforts.

Crews who check for gas leaks don't normally work at this time of year, since the ground would usually be frozen solid.

However, the mild weather people have enjoyed this fall means pipes could be shifting in the ground, raising the risk of leaks.

SaskEnergy is spending $6.5 million to inspect and repair its gas line system. The provincial utility is also offering a $25 rebate on natural gas monitors to eligible homeowners.
