An American tourist who police say accidentally shot his guide on a hunting trip in Saskatchewan has been charged with a variety of offences.

The 28-year-old guide, who is from Glaslyn, Sask., was shot while the two were hunting in a wooded area 65 kilometres south of Meadow Lake, Sask., on Nov. 17.

RCMP said the mishap occurred while the guide was trying to quietly enter a hunting blind. When he began to open the zipper on the blind the hunter inside accidentally discharged his rifle. The bullet passed through the guide's hand and entered his abdomen.

He is in stable condition in a Saskatoon hospital, where he was taken for surgery after the accident. Police said he is expected to be released from hospital sometime this week.

The 72-year-old man from Staten Island, N.Y., appeared in Meadow Lake provincial court on Monday, charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm and careless use of a firearm. He is also facing a charge under the Wildlife Act of discharging a firearm in a careless manner.

The man was released on $15,000 bail. He is scheduled to return to court in Meadow Lake in April.
