City where Riel hanged flies Métis flag

A Métis Nation flag now flies at Regina City Hall — and the city says it's a first.
Never before has the Métis flag been permanently raised in front of a major municipal government building, the City of Regina said Tuesday.
What's also significant is that Regina is where Métis leader Louis Riel was hanged in 1885 after being convicted of treason for his role in the Northwest Rebellion.
The Métis flag, which was raised Tuesday in a ceremony attended officials from the city and the Métis community, joins the recently added Treaty 4 flag honouring Saskatchewan's First Nations people.
The event, coming one day before the anniversary of Riel's death, is a meaningful one, said Robert Doucette, the president of Métis Nation of Saskatchewan
"This is the first city in Canada to fly a Métis infinite flag in its square," he said. "You know, I just think that it's setting the tone for the rest of Canada to follow and be inclusive of a great people who have given so much for this country."
