Teenagers and children in La Ronge took part in the annual Sisters in Spirit vigil on Tuesday, to raise awareness about missing and murdered aboriginal women.

This year, events were held in more than 60 communities across the country.

The one in La Ronge brought out 100 people, most of them from local schools.

They met at lunch time, singing and carrying signs with pictures of missing and murdered Saskatchewan women.

Aleisha Charles, 16, came with her three sisters.

"We want to help the people who are hurting, and who are missing the people that they know are missing and are gone, and have been murdered," she said.

Charles said she and her sisters tell each other everything and stick together to stay safe.

"There's lots of things that we worry about here," she said. "We could get hurt like this, like how all these people have been."

The Sisters in Spirit events are organized by the Native Women's Association of Canada, which has chosen Oct. 4 as an annual day of vigil.

It says there are more than 580 missing and murdered aboriginal women in Canada.

According to the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police there are currently 29 missing women from Saskatchewan, 17 of whom are aboriginal.

There are also vigils being held in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Yorkton, and Onion Lake.
