A 71-year-old man has drowned at Last Mountain Lake northwest of Regina.

RCMP said they were called around 6 p.m. CST Monday about a drowning on the lake near the community of Kinookimaw.

Three men were out on the water in a four-metre aluminum boat when it was windy and the water was rough, the RCMP said.

When waves capsized the boat, two men managed to swim to shore, but the third man didn't make it.

On Tuesday afternoon police issued a news release identifying the drowning victim as Johan Lebert from Wort, Germany.

Police also described a desperate effort to rescue the man.

"A bystander who was on shore observed Lebert in distress and jumped into the water and brought him back to shore," police said in their update on the case. "Attempts to revive Lebert through CPR were made, however [that was] unsuccessful."

When EMS arrived, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police also noted that no one in the boat was wearing a life jacket.

It's the second drowning death on the lake in two weeks. On July 26, a 23-year-old man who had been swimming at Fox's Point drowned. His body was found in the lake two days later.
