The mother of Saskatoon's third homicide victim of 2011 is speaking out against violence, following the first court appearance of a 15-year-old boy accused in the death of her son.

"There's no excuse for this," Grace Barr said Tuesday, her voice rising with anger and emotion. "It's not right to do this."

Inside the provincial court building, in youth courtroom #2, a youth had just made his first appearance on a charge of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Jaron Tyler Jahnke, 28.

The boy, whose name cannot be published, was remanded in custody until his next court date.

The victim, Jaron Jahnke, was known to his friends as Jaron Lafond after he began using his mother's maiden name as his surname.

He died in hospital after being shot in the upper body in the early hours of Friday, July 29.

"This is going to affect my family for the rest of their lives," Barr said following the brief court proceedings. " I'll never hear my son's voice again. He didn't have a mean bone in his body to do any harm to anybody."

Barr said she was upset but determined to send a message to parents about taking responsibility for raising their children.

"Look at our courts," she said, "[They're] filled with youth that keep getting out and getting out."

No other information about the case was provided by police.

The shooting brought Saskatoon's emergency response team to the 600 block of Avenue H South, where bean bag pellets were fired at windows to gain entry to a home.

While several people were removed from the house, which was near where the shooting took place, police said they did not find the suspect there on Friday.
