Film and television projects in Saskatchewan are picking up after what some in the industry are calling a slow year.

"We got hit by a global decline in the economy so the last couple of years have been a lot slower than we're used to having in production in Saskatchewan," Suzanne Bell, the head of SaskFilm, told CBC News Tuesday. "The market is rebounding, which is evident, and we're really seeing a strong upswing in production."

SaskFilm is a government-funded agency that promotes production activity in the province and manages the Canada-Saskatchewan Soundstage in Regina.

The stage is currently being used for the television comedy series InSecurity.

Bell said the stage has also been used for a recent feature film shoot and another movie production is planning to use the facility.

Rhonda Baker, a Saskatchewan-based producer, said she has noticed people in the business had moved to greener pastures, but were returning as the work picked-up at home.

"The membership in our unions have dropped significantly so everybody's feeling the pinch," Baker told CBC News. "They're feeling very vulnerable but hoping that now that we've had our little spell [of slow times], that we're all hoping it's over."
