The RCMP in Yorkton, Sask., have charged a local man with kidnapping an 11-year-old girl, following an incident at the city's summer fair last week.

Melvin Dale Koroluk, 57, is charged with kidnapping and assault.

On Wednesday, a girl was found walking through a farmer's field after she had allegedly been taken by a man and driven north of the city.

The girl told police she met a man at the Yorkton Exhibition and was told he would give her money to play games if she followed him back to his car.

Once at the car, which was parked several blocks away, he offered to give her a ride back, the girl said.

Instead of taking her to the fair, he drove her about five kilometres north of the city.

The girl told police she managed to get out of the car and run into the field.

Police said Koroluk was identified as a suspect after the girl spotted him on the street and told her mother.

The police investigated further and then charged him with kidnapping and assault.

After Koroluk's home was searched, he was also charged with unsafe storage of firearms.

Koroluk was scheduled to make his first appearance in provincial court on the charges on Tuesday afternoon.
