The animal shelter in Saskatoon is looking after 32 dogs that were seized from a farm property near MacNutt, Sask.

The Saskatoon SPCA said the dogs, mostly greyhounds or greyhound-mixes, were neglected and taken from the property on Monday by the Saskatchewan SPCA.

Some of the dogs had been chained to rusty old appliances, tractor tires and bales of hay scattered around a muddy yard.

They had no drinking water.

The Saskatchewan SPCA said it seized the dogs after receiving a complaint about the condition of the animals.

"It wasn't a life-threatening situation," Kaley Pugh, the manager of animal protection services for the SPCA, told CBC News. "They weren't near death by any means. So we could allow the owner some time to try and rectify the situation. And he just didn't do that."

The animals could end up being made available after three days, Tiffiny Koback, shelter director for the Saskatoon SPCA said Tuesday.

Koback added that it was the fourth time in one year that the shelter has had to cope with the sudden arrival of a large number of animals, mostly dogs and cats.

"Receiving a large number of animals at once can pose unique challenges to our staff," she said, "however, the staff is always prepared and we have learned in the past that the community rallies around situations like this and are always willing to help."

MacNutt is about 370 kilometres southeast of Saskatoon, not far from the boundary with Manitoba.
