A semi-trailer tanker truck hauling anhydrous ammonia — a highly toxic compound — has rolled into a ditch without spilling the dangerous cargo, police say.
Officers from the Punnichy, Sask., detachment of the RCMP along with a crew from the Raymore Fire Department have been on the scene since the crash, which took place Tuesday at the intersection of Highway 6 and Highway 15.
Police said the tanker was carrying 11,232 kilograms of anhydrous ammonia.
"The semi tanks have not been punctured and are not leaking," police said in a news release. "But the anhydrous ammonia must be transferred to another tanker before the semi can be flipped onto the wheels and removed from the ditch."
Police said the operation could take several hours.
The area has been closed off to traffic and anyone within a two-kilometre radius of the rollover scene will also have to get out of the area during the transfer.
"Anhydrous ammonia may be fatal if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin," police said. "The vapors are extremely irritating and corrosive."
The investigation into the cause of the crash was ongoing.
Raymore is about 112 kilometres north of Regina.
