A man is in hospital under a police guard after being shot by RCMP in Melfort, Sask., early Saturday.

According to RCMP, the 45-year-old man, whose name has not been released, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was initially taken to the local hospital in Melfort, then moved to Saskatoon for further treatment.

Police said members of the Melfort detachment of the RCMP were dispatched at 1 a.m. CST to respond to "a domestic dispute involving firearms" at a home in the city, which is 175 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.

"While en route to the residence RCMP observed a subject vehicle departing the area," police said in a news release issued Saturday.

The officers turned on their emergency lights and followed the vehicle.

They said it stopped at another place in Melfort, where the driver got out, armed with a long gun. Police did not say if it was a rifle or a shotgun.

Police said what happened next would be the subject of further investigation, but noted "the driver's subsequent actions led to police firing shots at the subject."

That shooting is now being investigated by members of the Regina police service.

RCMP ended their news release by saying any further releases on the matter would come from the Regina police.
