A group of mom-and-pop stores in Regina are taking on larger competitors for the Christmas shopping rush by staying open late — but just for one night.

Shops along 13th Avenue, in the Cathedral Village neighbourhood, plan to ring in sales until midnight this Thursday. There are about 30 retail shops in the district.

One store, The Paper Umbrella, plans to keep its doors open past midnight Thursday and stay open for 24 hours. The shop did the same thing last Christmas.

"The 'little store' stayed open for a straight 24 hours and received great success in reminding the public about the importance of supporting the local businesses," the merchants said Tuesday in a release.

"This year the entire neighbourhood will be jumping on board by staying open late," the release said.

Shoppers will also be enticed with door prizes and hot drinks.
