The body of an adult was found in a home after a fire Thursday night in Regina's northeast.

Police say they were notified by the fire department about the body about 7:30 p.m.

Firefighters had extinguished a fire in a house on the 300 block of Toronto Street North when they discovered the body.

The deceased has not been identified.

"This is a sad day for the City of Regina and for Regina Fire and Protective Services," said Candace Liskowich, a spokeswoman for the fire department.

Liskowich added that the death, if it is confirmed as being linked to the fire, would be the first fire-related fatality in some time.

Initially, she believed that 18 months had passed since Regina's last fire fatality.

Liskowich later revised that to two-and-a-half years.

Police said Thursday night that investigators were on the scene.
