The Saskatchewan government said Monday it will spend $673,000 to ensure aboriginal and Métis groups can take part in an environmental review of a proposal to build the province's first diamond mine.

Saskatoon-based Shore Gold Inc. wants to develop and operate an open pit diamond mine and processing plant in Crown forest about 60 kilometres east of Prince Albert.

Government officials said the money will allow First Nations and Métis to provide input on how the project would affect their treaty and other rights.

The area of the proposed mine is claimed by the Sturgeon Lake First Nation as part of its traditional territory.

The province is keen on the proposal, saying the diamond mine would create jobs and help diversify the economy.

The company said it hopes to submit a required environment impact assessment to the provincial and federal governments within a few weeks.
