Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says he wants to get some expert advice on the impact of any takeover of the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan.

The Australian company BHP Billiton has started a process to acquire the company. PotashCorp is one of the largest companies in Saskatchewan. It mines potash, a key ingredient in fertilizer.

"I've asked the minister of energy and resources to attain some independent counsel ... from experts in the industry," Wall told reporters Thursday. "So that we can make sure that, as we evaluate all of this, that we are keeping Saskatchewan's interests at the top of the list."

Wall said he has met with officials from BHP, as well as PotashCorp and other industry players.

He said one area of particular concern is the impact on Canpotex, a marketing agency for potash companies.

"It is a strength of Saskatchewan that these companies work together to market the potash," Wall said. "We want to find out what the implications of all of this are for Canpotex."

Wall noted that he expects federal officials would review any transaction that led to a foreign takeover.

"I'm sure the federal government will have an investment review process," he said. "We would want to be engaged in that."
