A man is being treated in hospital for injuries following an explosion of natural gas at a commercial building in Maidstone, Sask.

RCMP from the local detachment say it is not clear what triggered the explosion.

Firefighters and volunteers from the Maidstone fire department and local EMS were quick to respond, RCMP noted.

"[Their] efforts in dealing with the fire and treating the injured [man] substantially reduced the risk to the public and will assist in the injured man's recovery," RCMP said in a release.

Police did not report the extent of the man's injuries but said he was receiving further treatment in hospital in Saskatoon.

Maidstone is about 220 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon.

Occupational Health and Safety officials from the province are investigating.
