Saskatchewan is entering a period of high risk for the West Nile Virus now that the summer mosquito season is in full swing, provincial experts say.

"We strongly encourage people to take personal protective measures," Dr. Saqib Shahab, Saskatchewan's top medical official said Friday.

According to the province, the risk of exposure to the virus in beginning to increase because of higher numbers of mosquitoes.

"The next two weeks will be critical in terms of assessing the West Nile Virus risk for the rest of the season," Phil Curry, Saskatchewan's co-ordinator for West Nile Virus programs, said.

He noted that mid-July through August is typically the highest risk period because of more mosquitoes and more people spending time outside.

"While most people who become infected with the virus experience mild or no symptoms, there is always a small percentage of severe cases," Shahab added.

So far this year, no one in Saskatchewan has tested positive for the virus, officials said.
