A Saskatoon street gang believed involved in drug trafficking and other criminal activities has a provincial business licence.
The gang known as Cash Boyz owns a business, Cash Boyz Ent., that has a licence to "provide music," according to provincial records.
That revelation came last week in the closing stages of the trial of Ryley Lorne Olynik, who is charged with attempted kidnapping in an incident in which three alleged members of the Cash Boyz gang tried to drag another man into a car last November.
The victim was pistol-whipped before escaping from his attackers.
A witness at the attempted kidnapping trial of Ryley Lorne Olynik said Olynik set up a failed drug deal worth $10,000 but was not among the men involved in the attack that led to his arrest. (CBC)It's alleged that Olynik was one of the three men, but Devon Cameron, who was testifying under immunity granted to defence witnesses under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, said that's not the case.
Cameron testified he had $10,000 in cash and was trying to buy two kilograms of marijuana, adding Olynik set up the buy but wasn't one of the three men involved in the attack.
Crown prosecutor Frank Impey called this typical of testimony at the trial, during which defence witnesses have spoken without fear of facing charges.
"At least the one individual was admitting to setting up a rather large sale, or purchase rather, of a large amount of marijuana, presumably for redistribution," Impey said.
"There seems to be no compunction, no difficulty in the Cash Boyz street gang admitting that's exactly what they're doing — that they are, in fact, a street gang."
Final arguments in Olynik's trial are set for August.
