A man serving a life sentence for murder has pleaded guilty to a killing in the lunchroom of the maximum-security wing of the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert earlier this year.

Jacob Worm was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the Jan. 4 stabbing death of Daniel Richard Wolfe, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter Monday in a Prince Albert courtroom.

Worm received a 10-year-sentence, but the time was made concurrent with his existing life sentence.

Five other men, including others charged with murder and other serious crimes and serving lengthy terms, have been charged in connection with the fatal stabbing. Corrections officials said the stabbing happened during a prison fight involving a number of men.

Some of those charged have affiliations with gangs, including Worm.

Wolfe, who has roots in Manitoba, was a high-profile member of the Indian Posse street gang.

Crown attorney John Morrall said videotaped surveillance footage from the prison shows that Wolfe's killing happened when he tried to intervene in a prison fight in which two other men were stabbed.

Cheyenne Nelson and Keith Coutu were stabbed 20 time each, but survived.

"What happened is Mr. Wolfe … tried to intervene in that stabbing, and because he wasn't part of what was happening, they wanted him not to intervene and they stabbed him twice, and one of the knife wounds went through his lung and heart, causing his death," Morrall said.

"It appears to me from watching the video he didn't really know what was going on," Morrall added.

Wolfe had recently been sentenced to life in prison on two convictions for first-degree murder in a gang-related incident in 2007. Wolfe killed two men and wounded three other people in a home-invasion-style attack on rival gang members.

On April 3, 2009, Worm was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 16 years in the 2006 shooting death of Douglas Anderson.

Anderson was shot in the stomach during a Regina home invasion in which Worm and two accomplices mistakenly thought they were going into a home known to have drugs.

Court heard Worm fired the fatal shot.

Also charged with second-degree murder in the death of Wolfe is Tristan Raphael, 27.

Four others have been charged with manslaughter:

• Michael Slippery,
• Nolan Turcotte, and
• Francis Yukon.
