A 79-year-old woman who has Alzheimer's disease is missing from a Saskatoon care home, police say.

Violet Hegedus walked away from the home, in the 300 block of Kenderdine Road, on Tuesday around 4:30 p.m. local time.

Police said she was last seen wearing a beige fleece jacket with horizontal white stripes, dark-coloured dress pants and navy blue cloth shoes.

While that clothing would have been OK for a daytime walk, police noted that the evening hours brought heavy rains to Saskatoon and there was some concern that the woman was not dressed appropriately for inclement weather.

The missing woman is five-foot tall and weighs 110 pounds. Her hair is white.

"Anyone seeing Violet is asked to call police so she can be safely returned home," police said in a news release.

The phone number for the Saskatoon police is 306-975-8300.

Police said a number of patrol units have been in the area looking for the woman.
