A Regina woman who recently gave birth is in hiding following a house fire on Friday that the fire department says could have been deliberatedly set.

No one was hurt when fire swept through a home at 40 Cecil Cr. in the city's west-side Coventry Place neighbourhood.

Lorena Kelly wasn't home at the time because she was in hospital, having just given birth to a daughter.

Police have told her the fire is suspicious, and now Kelly is scared for her own safety and that of her newborn child.

A friend came to the hospital and told her about the fire and the death of her beloved cat in the blaze.

She was also saddened to hear that the preparations she had made for her daughter were ruined.

"You know, I had literally just finished the nursery for the baby probably a week before that, had been down on my hands and knees installing the baseboards and stuff, and now it's gone," she said.

The most alarming news came later, when police told her the fire could have been arson.

"To look at the possibility that it was deliberately set and we could have been there at the time, and it could have been awful is something you don't want to think about," she said.

Kelly is hiding out in a safe location, although she says she doesn't feel safe.

"Obviously, when somebody's violated your home like that and been able to do that much, you have to wonder what's next," she said.

The fire department says the fire began in the living room. There was damage to both floors of the house and the basement.

The damages are estimated at $60,000. Police are investigating.
