The Regina Humane Society will take to the airwaves Sunday night in hopes of raising cash and finding homes for a recent influx of adoptable dogs and puppies.

The shelter's goal is to raise $50,000 for day-to-day operating costs by hosting a four-hour telethon on local public access TV, said shelter spokesman Don Simons.

The telethon will be broadcast in the city on Channel 7 from 6-10 p.m. CT.

Simons said he's hopeful that in addition to raising cash, people will also consider adopting a pet. While the shelter's cat population is currently in decline, Simons said there are a large number of dogs in need of good homes.

"We have over 90 dogs in there right now, but we have another 72 puppies in our system who at some point are going to be coming up for adoption," Simons said.

"That's sort of worrisome because we're getting toward the spring season which is usually puppy season – and we're not even there yet," he said.

During the broadcast, the shelter plans to highlight a number of stories about successful adoptions and profiles of animals that have beaten the odds, Simons said.

One example would be the story of a puppy named Dale, who at the age of two weeks lost his littermates in a farm accident. Dale lost a leg, but survived, Simons said.

"And now he's this happy, rambunctious dog that runs around, you wouldn't even know he was missing a leg," Simons told CBC News.

"But he's got the energy, he's running around … he's with a bunch of other dogs in a home, and he's a real success story," Simons said.
