The government of Saskatchewan is spending $250,000 on earthquake relief in Haiti.

The province made the announcement about cash to help Haiti on Friday afternoon, saying it will give the money through the Red Cross. Saskatchewan has also offered to provide people and equipment, including health care and search and rescue teams, the province said in a news release.

Saskatchewan joins eight other Canadian provinces, which are also giving money to help people devastated by the Jan. 12 earthquake. Only Quebec's government has not yet donated any money.

The federal government is earmarking up to $50 million to match Canadians' donations to eligible charitable organizations in the country.

In a news release, Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister Yogi Huyghebaert urged Saskatchewan people to give generously.

"Saskatchewan people and their generous spirit have always stepped up to the plate to help those in need," Huyghebaert said.

The Red Cross estimates that between 45,000 and 50,000 people might have died in the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that hit the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince on Tuesday.
