Trevor Dimen is brought to court in Regina on Friday for sentencing. He received a 10-year prison sentence. With credit for time already served, he will serve six years and eight months. (CBC)A Regina man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing his father, but he'll get credit for time already served.
Trevor Scott Dimen, 41, who was found guilty of manslaughter in June in the death of his 69-year-old father, Bill, was sentenced in Court of Queen's Bench in Regina on Friday.
Justice Fred Kovach gave Dimen credit for the months he has already served in jail awaiting trial, meaning Dimen will spend an additional six years and eight months in a federal penitentiary.
Dimen showed little reaction, beyond raising his eyebrows, as Kovach delivered his sentence. He listened as Kovach spoke about the circumstances surrounding Bill Dimen's death.
Court had previously heard that on April 11, 2008, the elder Dimen was found at the bottom of a flight of stairs in his home with fatal injuries following an argument with his son.
Kovach noted that Trevor Dimen had been asked repeatedly to leave the house and didn't. He cited Dimen's lack of remorse and his unwillingness to accept responsibility.
The judge also spoke about Dimen's mental state, noting he has delusions of persecution.
During his eight-day trial, one in which Dimen represented himself, court heard that Dimen told police it was an accident. But Kovach ruled that it was the series of unlawful acts that Dimen committed that made his father's death a manslaughter.
Outside the courthouse Friday, relatives of Trevor Dimen showed no sympathy.
Dean Deschene, a cousin, said many family members continue to fear Dimen and he hopes he never gets out of prison.
"He's no longer a family member. He's just some slug who's in jail, and he's got what he deserved," Deschene said.
