Players shake hands after the University of Calgary Dinos defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 39-38 Saturday in Saskatoon. (Dan Zakreski/CBC)The University of Calgary Dinos won the west championship in university football Saturday in an exciting game against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
The 39-38 victory propels Calgary to a playoff game against St. Mary's University in one week.
Saturday's game, at Griffiths Stadium on the U of S campus, was played before an enthusiastic home crowd that had to stay until the very end for the outcome.
Calgary took the lead in the last three minutes of the fourth quarter.
But Saskatchewan marched back and was lined up for a field goal with just 18 seconds remaining to recapture the lead.
However, the kick from the 35-yard line was no good.
Calgary was able to run out the clock when they regained possession after the missed field goal.
The Dinos play St. Mary's in Halifax next Saturday. The winner of that game will advance to the championship game.
The Vanier Cup is in two weeks.
