Saskatchewan liquor stores are following the lead of supermarket chains and encouraging customers to bring their own bags.

Government-owned liquor outlets began giving out reusable bags Friday.

For the day, the green bags have been free with a purchase. Starting Saturday, they'll cost 97 cents.

Each bag holds up to six wine bottles, according the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority.

The government said this is just another way for the province to be environmentally responsible.

Plastic bags will be phased out at 79 government-owned liquor stores as current stocks are depleted.

Paper bags will continue to be available.
