The death of Chase McKay, shot by RCMP responding to a domestic dispute in 2008, is the focus of a coroner's inquest set for Nov. 2.

The circumstances of McKay's death have not been fully detailed by officials, but it was expected the inquest will provide more information about what happened.

The 21-year-old died June 14, 2008, at a home on the White Bear First Nation, near Carlyle in Saskatchewan's southeast.

McKay is also known as Chase Standingready. The official announcement of the inquest provided his full name as Kenneth Chase Wilfred Standingready-McKay.

The inquest into his death is scheduled for five days and will take place at the Carlyle town hall. Regina lawyer Keith Kilback will oversee the inquest.

McKay's death was one of several RCMP fatal shootings in 2008 that sparked calls from first nations leaders for a special examination of the relationship between aboriginals and police.

The obituary published shortly after his death described McKay as a kind man with a warm smile.

He left a daughter, a companion and many other family members.

In the winter prior to his death, McKay played for the White Bear Red Hawks Hockey club. He also had a job with the White Bear Lake Resort.

The reserve and Carlyle are about 200 kilometres southeast of Regina.
