The Leader-Post says it will send some advertising production jobs to India and the Philippines. (CBC) The Regina Leader-Post, the city's daily newspaper, has told employees it's outsourcing some of its jobs overseas.
On Thursday, Canwest Publishing confirmed that some advertising production jobs will be moved to India and the Philippines.
The affected employees received notice a few days ago.
Canwest didn't say how many people would be affected, or if the changes would include Canwest employees in other cities. The company did say newsroom jobs aren't affected.
The company is making the move to cut costs.
"Due to challenges faced by our industry, the global economic downturn and serious impacts to advertising revenue, we have been conducting strategic reviews across our company with a goal of reducing our operating [expenses] — as have all other media companies," Canwest director of communications Phyllise Gelfand said in an email to CBC News.
"This was not an easy decision to make and not one that was made lightly."
More than 150 U.S.-based newspapers have taken similar measures, outsourcing such work, Gelfand said.
The company is owned by Canwest Global Communications Corp., which has been struggling to repay its debt for the past year. It has about $4 billion in total debt.
