Owners of the Regina nightclub Habanos were fined for locking fire exits. (CBC)The owners of a Regina nightclub have been fined $4,200 for two violations of fire regulations involving locked doors.
The company that owns Habanos Night Club pleaded guilty earlier this week to allowing "means of egress," or exits, to be blocked on Oct. 31, 2008, and Jan. 30, 2009.
The Regina Fire Department said Habanos had padlocked some of the doors, with the result that they couldn't be used as fire exits.
Under the National Fire Code of Canada and the Regina Fire Bylaw, fire exits have to be maintained and ready to use.
"Regardless of the regulations, we need to ensure that people — whether in a day care, a seniors complex or, in this case, a nightclub — that they are able to escape quickly and safely in the event of an emergency," Regina Fire Department spokeswoman Angela Prawzick said.
The maximum fine for the offence is $10,000 for a corporation.
