The community of La Ronge, Sask., gathered on Wednesday to mourn the deaths of a young family in a suspicious apartment blaze.

The fire, still under investigation, tore through a four-storey apartment complex located near the 100 block of Nunn Street in La Ronge, around 12:25 a.m. May 26.

On Thursday, in the Lac La Ronge Indian Band hall, people paid their respects to Justin Paul Charles, 20, Marsha McKenzie, 19, and their son, Jeremy Charles, four months.

Other residents in the building were able to get out, suffering what police described as minor injuries.

Thomson Halkett, part of the extended family, said it helped for relatives and community members to come together.

"Well, it's being together, knowing that there are people who care," Halkett told CBC News on Wednesday. "That can support you and that goes a long way to healing."

Tammy Cook-Searson, chief of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, said the deaths have hit hard in the close-knit community.

"It's been very difficult to take," Cook-Searson said. "But there's been so much love and support and kindness shown to the family. And they've been very grateful for all the help and support they've received."

The RCMP and the local fire department said on Thursday that they are open to receiving any information people may have about the fire.

According to police, there were two suspicious fires on the night in question. In addition to the apartment fire, at around 3:50 a.m., a second fire was reported in the Morins Hill area of La Ronge. Police said that fire was at a vacant home, which suffered severe damage.

La Ronge, a northern town of 2,725, is about 380 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
