Health officials in Yorkton, Sask., have suspended a radiologist and will be reviewing 70,000 exam results after concerns were raised about the work he has done.

Sunrise Health Region officials told reporters Wednesday that Dr. Darius Tsatsi had his privileges suspended effective May 14 after problems with "the interpretation of diagnostic images" arose.

The images may have included X-rays, CT scans, mammograms and ultrasound tests.

The health unit believes there were "potential misinterpretations" of some of the images.

Patients who had any of those tests done in Yorkton in the past five years can call a toll-free number (1-877-854-4424) to find out whether their exams were reviewed by Tsatsi.

Tsatsi was one of three radiologists with privileges at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre.

A review of Tsatsi's work was conducted by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan. The College had three other doctors take a second look at 103 of Tsatsi's cases covering the period May 28 to Nov. 14, 2008.

The result was "significant clinical differences of opinion" in some of the cases, the health region said.

Another 70,000 exams will now be "revisited," region officials said.

"We are committed to reducing people's concerns," said Joe Kirwan, the chief executive officer of the Sunrise Health Region. "Patients will be made aware of their exams and their family physicians will be notified."

Radiology is the branch of medicine dealing with diagnostic imaging, and is often used in the detection and treatment of cancer and other illnesses.

The health region wasn't able to provide a breakdown about which suspected conditions the tests were associated with.

However, it did provide some details about Tsatsi, who was trained in South Africa and has been working in Saskatchewan since 2004.

In addition to the Sunrise Health Region, Tsatsi has also worked in the Cypress Health Region in the province's southwest and the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region.

Officials said Tsatsi has twice taken an exam to be certified in Saskatchewan and has failed both times. He has one more chance to pass,

While the investigation is underway, Tsatsi has agreed not to practice radiology, officials said.

Health Minister Don McMorris told reporters Wednesday he was concerned about the findings and would take every measure to ensure the 70,000 tests are redone as soon as possible.

If it means having some of the assessments done out of province, then that's what will be done, McMorris said.
