First Nations University of Canada academic vice-president Shauneen Pete has been dismissed — the latest high-profile departure at the institution.

Pete, who was based at the university's main campus in Regina, did not return calls made by CBC News.

Officials at First Nations University said they won't comment on an internal personnel matter.

FNUC president Charles Pratt released a statement saying Herman Michell, a former faculty representative of the board of governors, has been appointed as an interim vice-president.

Over the past four years, a number of senior staff have been let go and several have left of their own accord.

Some of those departures occurred amid disputes over issues of academic freedom and what some see as political interference.

One of the departed officials, former administration vice-president Wes Stevenson, has been charged with defrauding the institution.
