Three young people were arrested after a fire ripped through a heritage building near downtown Regina Wednesday.

At around 4 p.m., about 24 firefighters were busy fighting the blaze at the 75-year-old Grain Show Building in Ipsco Place as thick, dark smoke poured out of the building on the 1700 block of Elphinstone Street.

No one was believed to be injured, and there was no immediate word from fire officials on how the blaze started.

However, Regina police said they arrested three youths in the vicinity shortly after the fire broke out.

One of the youths ran, but police quickly caught him.

Charges against the three are possible, depending on the outcome of the investigation, police spokeswoman Elizabeth Popowich said. All three are believed to be 17 years old.

The municipal heritage building is located across the street from the heavily used Lawson Leisure Centre.

The oblong building was constructed to house exhibits at the World Grain Show, which was held at the Regina Exhibition in 1933.

After the grain show, the building served for many years as the home of the well-known Caledonian Curling Club.

The "Callie," which has since moved, was home to many outstanding curlers, including the Marj Mitchell rink and the Olympic-gold medal winning Sandra Schmirler rink.

In recent years, the building has been used as a storage space to house items from the Agribition agricultural show.

Some 20 older buildings at Ipsco Park are slated for demolition under a multimillion-dollar overhaul. It was hoped that some architectural features of the Grain Show Building could be saved, however.

Firefighters had the fire contained by 5 p.m.
