Lorne Calvert, leader of the NDP in Saskatchewan, is expected to announce his plans for the future on Thursday. (CBC)Former Saskatchewan premier Lorne Calvert is ready to share his plans for his future as leader of the provincial NDP, sources have told CBC News.
Calvert is scheduled for a speaking engagement Thursday night in Saskatoon and he is expected to reveal whether his party will be launched into a leadership race.
When Calvert lost the provincial election in 2007, he said it was unlikely he would stay on as leader for another campaign but he planned to stay in the post for a while, to assist with rebuilding the party.
It was not clearly defined how long that would be, but Calvert did suggest 18 months would be enough time.
The former premier is also on record as saying he preferred there be a contest for the leadership post.
