A Saskatchewan couple is counting on 08-08-08 to be their lucky day.
Jennifer Lindberg and Matthew Leson of Prince Albert are getting married on Friday, Aug. 8, 2008.
Eight is traditionally a lucky number in Chinese tradition, and though Lindberg and Leson aren't Chinese, they're hoping some good luck will rub off on their marriage.
Eight has also always been Jennifer's favourite number.
"I don't know. I think I just decided when I was eight years old that eight was my favourite number and it's never steered me wrong," she said.
Lindberg said she got the idea for the wedding date while listening to CBC Radio last year around the time when many marriages were held on 07-07-07 — a day considered lucky in many cultures around the world. One story concluded by saying 08-08-08 would likely be a big day for marriages, too, planting the seed in her mind for her own marriage, she said.
Lindberg and Leson will be married by Jennifer's uncle Arne Lindberg, a provincial marriage commissioner who says he was swamped with calls from other people asking to be married on Aug. 8.
"I had one guy phone me, actually on Wednesday of this week, to do one for Friday, and I told him I couldn't do it because I was doing this one for my niece, and it's pretty special," he said. "He was a little taken aback that I couldn't do two ceremonies in one day."
Meanwhile, Jennifer Lindberg said there could be another advantage to being married on 08-08-08.
"He'll have an easier time remembering our anniversary, so that will make it smoother," she said.
