All the focus was on the returning Kerry Joseph, but it was Steven Jyles who stole the show Sunday night.

Jyles threw one touchdown and engineered a late drive that led to the winning touchdown, as the Saskatchewan Roughriders posted a 28-22 victory over the Toronto Argonauts in Joseph's much-anticipated return to Regina.

Running back Wes Cates scored his eighth touchdown of the campaign with three minutes left in regulation to allow the Roughriders to improve to 5-0, their best start to a season since 1934. Toronto fell to 2-3, but remains in a tie with the Montreal Alouettes for first place in the CFL's East Division.

Quarterback Darian Durant started for Saskatchewan, but left the game in the first quarter after taking a heavy hit on a failed passing play. Jyles came on in relief and had a solid outing, throwing for one touchdown and one interception, and completing 14-of-18 passes for 201 yards.

"(Jyles) did an excellent job," said Roughriders coach Ken Miller. "He executed the plays we gave him extremely well. Some of you have been saying to me the last few weeks that we have two quarterbacks who can win and I say no, we have three."

Cates took some pressure off Jyles by rushing for two touchdowns and 130 yards on 24 carries.

Sunday's contest marked Joseph's first game back in Saskatchewan since the 2007 campaign when he guided the Riders to their first Grey Cup title in 18 seasons and earned the CFL's most outstanding player award in the process.

In the off-season, Saskatchewan and the quarterback couldn't come to terms on a contract extension, which resulted in a surprising trade that sent Joseph to Toronto.

"It's different (being on the other sideline)," said Joseph. "You just have to try and take their momentum away. I appreciate what they did for me … but I just wanted to play football."

Joseph had better stats than Jyles (21-of-42 passing for 259 yards with one touchdown pass) but the former Rider quarterback couldn't get anything going on the Argos' final drive when they needed a touchdown to win the game.

"(Joseph) put up 20-some points and that should be enough for us to win most days," said Argos head coach Rich Stubler. "We just didn't play well enough on the other side of the ball."

Durant reportedly suffered broken ribs on the play, while star receiver Andy Fantuz suffered a broken fibula in the third quarter.

The Argonauts led 4-0 after the first quarter when play was halted for 40 minutes due to severe thunderstorms, as strong winds and a heavy downpour of rain and hail sent fans running for cover.

Joseph wasted little time when play resumed, scoring on a 13-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to put the Argos up 11-0.

The Riders answered back minutes later when Jyles found Andy Fantuz in the end zone, but Joseph threw a 19-yard touchdown strike to Arland Bruce to make it 18-7 for Toronto.

Saskatchewan's Luca Congi connected on a 46-yard field goal late in the half to cut the deficit to eight points.

A Toronto turnover early in the third quarter allowed Jyles to march the Riders downfield before Cates punched the ball into the end zone from two yards out to score his seventh touchdown of the season.

After a Toronto single, Congi gave Saskatchewan its first lead of the game when he booted a 32-yard field goal to make it 20-19 for the Riders.

Mike Vanderjagt's 41-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter restored Toronto's lead.

Cates's second touchdown of the game capped a lengthy Saskatchewan drive and the Riders added a single with 64 seconds left before the Argos final drive stalled.
