Little Mosque stars Yasir (Carlo Rota, left) and Baber (Manoj Sood) discuss the beginning of Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, in a scene from the CBC-TV series. (CBC)The Saskatchewan community of Indian Head will be a fine stand-in for the fictional town of Mercy in the upcoming third season of Little Mosque on the Prairie, a producer of the CBC-TV series said Thursday.
Producers chose the farming town of 1,600, located 70 kilometres east of Regina, as their main Saskatchewan location this year because it had the right mix of downtown activity, small town authenticity and easy access to the wide open prairie, producer Michael Snook said in an interview on CBC Saskatchewan's noontime radio program Blue Sky.
The award-winning comedy, now preparing episodes for its third season, revolves around the trials and tribulations of a group of Muslims who live in a small prairie town.
Snook said crews are building a facsimile of the mosque used in its previous two seasons. The first mosque was an old church in Regina. The new one under construction in Indian Head will be a temporary structure that can be dismantled.
Crews are also building a gazebo set and a production office will be opened in the community this week, he said.
Although they did some shooting in Indian Head last summer, the show's creators also used places in Regina as well as other locations to fulfill the demands of the script, Snook said.
This year, they "can shoot pretty much in one place," said Snook, which should simplify the logistics.
The people of Indian Head have welcomed the television series with open arms, he said.
It should be good for the community, bringing extra attention and perhaps an increase in tourism, said Snook.
The show will begin a month of shooting in Indian Head in August.
The new season of Little Mosque on the Prairie goes to air on CBC-TV in October.
