Saskatchewan tips its hat to Quebec City on Thursday — the 400th anniversary of its founding.
The occasion is being marked all over the country. Bells at a number of churches all over Saskatchewan are set to start ringing at 9 a.m. CT.
In Regina's Wascana Centre, the chimes will ring at the Wascana Place building. Churches in the city participating in the bell-ringing include Knox-Metropolitan Church downtown.
It's been said 9 a.m. is the time Samuel de Champlain stepped off his ship on July 3, 1608, at the place where Quebec was founded.
The birthday is important because Quebec is the founding city of Canada, said Tom Lukiwski, the member of Parliament for Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre.
"Those who have been to Quebec City, as I have, know it's also the most romantic city in Canada — probably the most romantic city in North America," he said. "The celebrations will be going on throughout the year, but particularly on this day. Happy birthday, Quebec City. Enjoy the day. "
Liberal MP Ralph Goodale, who represents the Regina-area riding of Wascana, said history "drenches the whole community" in Quebec City and the birthday has significance for people across Canada.
"I simply want to say to everybody in Quebec, enjoy this anniversary to the absolute maximum. All of Canada is celebrating with you. Bonne fête, Quebec."
