The Saskatchewan government has temporarily shut down a First Nations-run group home near Kamsack, citing safety concerns.

The Keeseekoose home for girls was closed last week after police were called to deal with an alleged confrontation between staff and the three teenage residents, said Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer.

There were also reports that a fire had been started at the home.

"We want to be very proactive," she told CBC News Monday. "Unlike the past [NDP] administration, we don't want to deny any concerns that may be happening. Ultimately we must keep these kids safe so I asked for action immediately."

Harpauer said she plans to enforce high standards of care and ensure compliance with agreements with the province.

Saskatchewan's children's advocate had also raised concerns about the Keeseekoose home in late January.

Harpauer said all of the problems identified will be fixed before the home is allowed to reopen.

The three teens who were living at the home, operated by the Keeseekoose First Nation since 2001, have been sent to other facilities.

In 2006, the previous NDP government shut down Regina's Oyate Safe House for teenagers because of problems with the way it was being operated.
