Regina's McCrystal named top university football coach

Frank McCrystal of the University of Regina was named the Canadian university football coach of the year Thursday.
McCrystal received the Frank Tindall Trophy after leading the Regina Rams to a 6-2 record this season.
Steve Sumarah of Saint Mary's, Bishop's University's Leroy Blugh and Pat Sheahan of Queen's were the other finalists for the award. The University of Ottawa's Denis Piche won the award last year.
McCrystal has been the coach of the Rams for the past 24 years, including all nine seasons since Regina joined Canadian Interuniversity Sport in 1999. Prior to 1999, McCrystal was on the sidelines for the Rams' final 15 campaigns in the Canadian Junior Football League.
Regina has shown steady improvement since a winless 2004 season, claiming three victories in 2005 and four in 2006.
This year's Vanier Cup, Canadian university football's championship game, will see the No. 4-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies (9-1) battle the No. 3 Manitoba Bisons (11-0) Friday night in Toronto.
